Manipur's Attempt To Make Its Famous Loktak Lake As Bird’s Paradise


Manipur government's attempt to make the popular fishing zone the Loktak lake as bird’s paradise to boost its tourism sector with a transformed outlook as ‘Thingnunggei Bird Sanctuary’ as against to the fisher’s objection of Bishnupur district who make their livelihood through fishing.


Bishnupur district’s Thingnunggei lake is introspected to preserve its natural phenomena of migratory bird which makes it as an ideal tourism destination of Manipur. The state’s authority has instructed the fishers of the region to pursue an alternative option like fish and vegetable collection to retain their livelihood from this ideal Loktak natural resource point.


Loktak lake is one of the largest freshwater lake of north east India where due to increase human intervention to make their livelihood annually from this rich natural resource zone had took to sharp decline in the figure of migratory bird species.


Purpose of transforming the Loktak lake as ‘Thingnunggei Bird Sanctuary’ to help control increasing intervention of the poachers according to the Manipur’s forest department. Apart from human intervention it makes an ideal platform for the poachers to target not only the migratory bird of Loktak lake but also the rare antlered deer from the adjacent Keibul Lamjao national park.
