Project Brahmaputra Expressway Is The Right Call To Save Assam From Flood?

Project Brahmaputra Expressway will be a proper investment as lot of worth to go for it where Rastriya Barh Ayog (RBA) had to state 39.58 % of Assam’s land is flood prone apart from being recognized as seismic zone.

Assam like rest of Northeast states comes under seismic zone that intensifies more risk of earthquake frequency apart from river inundation possibilities. Since this region is in India’s extreme east also faces intensive challenges of landslide due to flood and frequent earthquakes.

Accumulation of land from landslide and erosion affects rivers to swell, leading water to overflow the embankment and spread fast to new remote areas, causing extensive deposition of silt and sand to the areas. This on turn makes the village crop land unfit for cultivation.

Technique of dredging of rivers was started long way back during Congress regime but its impact was not potential enough. Project Brahmaputra Expressway’s dredging project on both sides of the river has got affected due to higher intensity rainfall this year causing 8000 hectares of land loss with more widening in river’s width. This entire mess is due to changes in weather condition and the alternative to it according to expert is through  open of more water channels as dredging is an exhaustive process with annual widening of rivers.
