Continued land dispute over airport development has finally resolved while
one section for runway purpose is temporarily on hold as the Supreme Court has
not given any clearance yet according to the Advocate General of Meghalaya.
Completion deadline for the airport infrastructure is four months where for
the runway disputed area the work progress is to take place soon near the
airport boundary as the North Eastern Council (NEC) assured financial support
for its development once SC gives clearance on acquisition.
Last May 2016 the
apex court had to halt the work process as complain was registered by Nongsder
based land owners who did not derive the compensation as promised to them. The
state government is fighting its level best to establish a much needed national
networking mode for expanding its horizon and attract greater inflow of
tourists including fulfillment of the absence of rail and road networking with rest
of India. Meghalaya is in the acute need of proper central networking mode as
it is a landlocked region where
its current status is that it has only one operational ATR flight for Shillong and
Kolkata connectivity only.
