Locally Named ‘Katley’ Has Become Sikkim’s State Fish

Cooper Mahseer locally named ‘Katley’ has been officially termed as the state fish by the Sikkim government to emphasize on fish conservation and its value.

Katley fish is quite popular in Sikkim as it has the ability to survive in various altitudes of the state but most predominant in Rangit and Teesta water bodies. In Sikkim fish has highest consumption and so its market value. Katley fish is considered to be as an endangered species by the ICAR –National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources Lucknow in 1992.
