Decades winding back to late 60’s
and early 80’s era people of Guwahati could recollect the enjoyment of rare rich
variety of fresh fruits delivered by the Garo Hills tribes of the neighboring
state Meghalaya to Assam capital city’s border markets but with times this
trading relation has today come to extinct.

According to a resident of
Guwahati, Debajoti Borah who recounts the relish moments of fresh delicious
fruits of Meghalaya during the time of his childhood before being shifted to
Assam and stated, “Today it is rare to see fruit items of Garo traders from
Shillong in Guwahati as itself the commercial market of the capital city of
Meghalaya is not self sufficient of its local products and due to expensiveness
it has added streamline in its distribution.”

An
Assamese hotel owner in Shillong, Moon Hazarika marked, “The prices have shot
up of Meghalaya fruits as it is rare in India and due to global market demand
the limited stock items are fetched with better price with various outside
clients before it could be fetched by any Guwahati fruit traders. The Guwahati
dealers are unable to make futuristic tie up with Meghalaya fruit traders as
they cannot promise potential supply to the market demand here. This has added
disadvantage why Guwahati is unable to revive fruit business tie up with
Meghalaya and retain the charm of its fruit flow in its market at better price
rather depending on global import stocks to add variety to it fruit business.”
