Recently Majuli has come out with a new strategy to advance the district on economic and cultural front by stressing Brahmaputra Board and the Majuli Cultural Landscape Management Authority (MCLMA) bodies to extend support in its organic dream plus tourism and culture advancement.
Majuli Island Protection and Development Council (MIPADC) chairman Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma a former MP stressed on the effectiveness of the two bodies in advancing its potential tourism aspects and strengthening its culture value.
MIPADC head Arun Kumar focusing on Majuli’s virgin aspect requested that the government of Assam to take initiative in declaring it as an organic didtrict and also emphasized to support development projects in the world’s largest riverine island that do not violates its popular Neo- Vaishnavism including other ethnic cultural values.
Majuli islanders’ main source of living is its natural resources and farming where because of rich soil support once it was recognized as the biggest organic food supplier in entire Assam. But this scenario was prominent when erosion did not hit the islanders so hard with intensified flood. Now river terminus for boat and ferry transportation is hit hard due to anti-erosion project that is affecting the district’s advancement process since there is no route network via vehicle or air.
Today Majuli has extensive challenges to retain its soil quality due to incessant flood and erosion. Will alone financial and external support from various welfare bodies enable to help grow its organic dream is a big question.
