Presently only Rs. 2000 notes are calibrated in Northeast ATMs as
proposed for smaller denomination notes like Rs.500 and Rs. 1000 where after
Kolkata Rs.500 will be issued in a week in Meghalaya.
Reason unknown why smaller denomination notes have not reached
Northeast region yet. It is true that if Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denomination
notes arrive fast then frequency in ATMs and banks will decrease.
Hopes cleared by Dr Sumeeth Jerath, The Additional Secretary
& Financial Advisor, Ministry of External Affairs when he assured of Rs.
500 notes arrival soon in the state after a meeting with the Regional Director,
RBI, Guwahati.
Ministry of Finance will ensure personally whether strong
economic areas of the state like West Khasi Hills, Ri-bhoi and West Jainita
Hills Districts are dispatched with small denomination notes. Till yet SBI ATMs
of Meghalaya are not calibrated with new Rs. 500 notes which will be
facilitated within the time frame.
