Never seen flood climax which Assam has witnessed in
2016, relates poor embankment infrastructure is one of its main reasons which
require improved version for new set up at bank side of rivers according to the
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Commerce & Industry and Transport
Chandra Mohan Patowary.
Present version of embankment infrastructure is 25 years
old where previous govt attempted no alteration, Minister Patowary emphasized
for latest technology and marked, “Agreement has been reached with the World
Bank under which the multilateral agency will provide 1500 corer to the state
for the embankment related works. Today many embankments are 25 years old and
there is need to upgrade and strengthen such structures.”
For implementation of latest technology embankment
infrastructure currently 16.50 lakh hectare land is targeted out of estimated
31.05 Lakh hectares of flood prone land in Assam according to Patowary.
Further emphasizing on encouraging approach of Assam’s newly led BJP government,
Patowary added, “Committed to rectifying this and has asked the World Bank and
the Asian development Bank to explore the possibility of going for the
“geo-tube” technology in embankments.”
Latest embankment version with Geo textile tube for
dewatering and exempting excess water of inundated rivers already installed by
Odisha government years back. The current cost of geotube will be Rs. 28 corer
per km comparatively to Rs. 2.2 corer per km for bank embankments of earth
usage, which still yet to be evaluated according to Minister Patowary.
Now how effective is Geotube technology ? The reasons are that it can be puffed with water which flow out excessively from the mouth of large water reservoirs or rivers and later could be used as water storage container during dry weather in agricultural field.
Process is simple and of low cost as there are varied sizes of Geotube
containers as per to requirements. Mobile water reservoir won’t be wrong to say
as it could be easily shifted to different places. There is no requirement of
complicated mechanism to set Geotube in embankment, few people clubbing can do
this job effectively.
How durable such Geotube? The textile of Geotube is
highly engineered to resist pressure including water reserve and watering agricultural sectors. It
is estimated to be highly cost effective method for erecting artificial bank to resist flooding by lake,
river or sea.
