Meghalaya Likely to Emerge as Top Tea Competitor

Meghalaya likely to excel as a brand name and position their rank globally as quality tea producers to compete with top contenders in tea from Northeast, India. After Assam and Darjeeling now Meghalaya’s farmers are fast taking their diversification to tea cultivation.

Acknowledging that it has suitable soil and climatic condition for quality tea plantation that would match for export, hundreds of villagers in Meghalaya are diversifying to tea cultivation for profitable farming outcome.

In Meghalaya about 2000 hectares of land are dedicated for tea cultivation which is in major processed in organic methodology. According to Meghalaya’s Horticulture Department officials the process of tea cultivation has been newly adapted to deliver quality product without much focus on volume and highlighted, “7 lakh tonnes of tea annually produced, 75% are grown without chemicals. Our objective is to produce low volume but high quality tea.”


Evidently due to financial success in tea cultivation emphasized villagers from seven villages in close proximity to the Khasi Hills district to adapt tea plantation according to the analysis of DL Nongspung Mawlyn, president of Tea Growers’ Society.


It is analyzed that the soil near Assam Border and in Garo Hills is found to be richly fertile that helps to produce high quality tea like Assam according to Agricultural Department Assistant Director Maqbool Lyngdoh Suiam. Globally Meghalaya tea is favored due to its intense texture and flavor. This refreshment powerful liquor is fast attracting customers from UK, Europe and Australia. Tea produced from Central Meghalaya is of excellent quality. Interestingly this quality tea is cultivated at the sloppy height of 3000 to 5500 feet, engulfed in misty environment.


To compete with top tea brand names, Meghalaya has found a brand name for their tea that is categorized as superior quality, rich texture and pleasantly aromatic. “Meg Tea” is one of the top brand names of Meghalaya which is produced from Umsning, Ri Boi district. According to Agricultural official, “Meg Tea” brand is popularly recognized for its intense green and black orthodox quality.
