Can ASDMA Drive Guwahati Municipality Board To Materialize The Long Awaited Project On Water Harvesting?


Necessity of water harvesting project in Guwahati capital city has become a major urge of the people to counteract safe water drinking and excess water logging issues where hopes are attached to the recent meet conducted by the Assam State disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) with all state level higher officials from government department in concern to Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) development including groundwater recharging (GWR) for urban flood management and water conservation.


To give an edge to the matter for effective implementation of the project the participants involved during the meet marked that the Guwahati Municipal corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Metrolpolitian Development Authority (GMDA) should instruct to all the builders especially in city areas to implement Guwahati building bylaws’ existent clauses with strict observance to RWH and GWR factors.


ASDMA Project Co-ordinator Minakshi Das Nath when was approached to specify how the residential area people will be on equivalent advantage from such water saving initiative then she added, “ASDMA along with the Guwahati Municpality Board are to take the matter on the next successful level after the latest session where in there will be open public interaction to understand how best to progress in effective implementation of this residential cum commercial area water harvesting project. The residential area water harvesting project definitely has a different layout in comparative to rest projects as laws and limitation are bounded to it.”


In the event the stress was made more on awareness through deliver of more such campaigns to involve entire public’s active participation to bring out more effective solution in regarding to urban flooding through implementation of RWH based infrastructure set up to enhance groundwater level  even after water usage. Way back in 2012, the Municipality board had conducted a pilot watershed project in the Hatigarh Chariali, Guwahati city to relate the process of rain water harvesting system in a simplified manner bu is yet to go in a big way to materialize the project. Already south and western region of India had made this building byelaw compulsory for new complex setup.
