World Water Day Was Observed But Will it Save Future Guwahati?

On 22nd March World Water Day was observed where ground water conservation and serious matter relating to its contamination was stressed but looking at growing pace of building layouts in Guwahati water criteria can become highly critical.

Presently total extraction against total groundwater available for extraction is around 57 % which is now categorized as safe by the CGWB (Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) but if no remedial measures are taken then Guwahati can be soon categorized a semi-critical if it crosses 70% mark. If matters of water shortage in the city not focused then this may pose serious threat in the future. Commercial ground water extraction activities is a grave concern and suggested should be shifted to the rural areas by CGWB. Percolation of rainwater into the subsurface has been extensively prevented by growing matter of concretization.
