Cancer Hazard, Potassium Bromate’s Paralytic Impact on Food Manufacturer



Meghalaya is giving a run to the bread manufacturers to get their samples tested positive, heading with other states of India took major action to ban bread sources tested negative.

In a recent research on bread samples the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has detected cancer causing element potassium bromate in bread. As a strict action to curb this health issue, the Meghalaya government has discharged 44 bread samples to Public Health Laboratory, Assam for detection of cancer triggering food additive. The reports are yet to arrive as the testing process will take 14 days time.

If banned additives as per to the law of National Food Safety Act are detected in the bread then the fate of particular bread source's will be sealed according to Health Minister A L Hek. Category 2B carcinogen which Potassium bromate is known as in many places like Australia,the European Union, Canada, Sri Lanka and Britain is restricted from the ingredient list of food manufacturer.


Be it any wheat puffed items like bread, burger or pizza has a percentage of potassium bromate which apart from cancer could trigger thyroid. This permitted additive potassium bromate is extensively used by bakers due to its cheap rate and effective quality to enhance elasticity of the dough.


Well it does not mean that it is an end of hope for those who daily live on bread for fast filling of the stomach and easy purchase. To save common man's heavy expenditure on food those dough materials could be allowed in the market which consist alternatives like Vitamin-C or Ascorbic acid.
